Strategy is a fancy word for prioritisation.
You have finite time and resources, so strategy is really figuring out how best to decide where you spend them.
What is going to move the needle the most?
That was a golden nugget dropped from the “Diary of a CEO” podcast interview with Alex Hormozi.
And it makes so much sense…
So where should you spend your energy? Before I share the key learnings below, I want to share the 1 thing that jumped out at me the most.
And it wasn’t what I expected.
Being a business owner means putting yourself out there, and that may mean content, or even stage time.
For my own personal journey, and I’m sure it rings true for many business owners, the size of the audience and challenges only gets bigger.
What stops many people progressing in business is the fear of publicly failing. Hormozi, said – at some point, looking back on your failure, it is going to be funny. So it might as well be funny now. That is a genius reframe!
Here were my key takeaways:
1. Fear is the Real Barrier to Wealth
Most people stay broke not because of tactics, but because they fear judgment, failure, and leaving their comfort zone.
The biggest leap is emotional, not strategic.
2. Pick one “P” to start
Business gold lies in:
- Pain you’ve lived
- Profession you’ve mastered
- Passions that won’t quit
You only need one to win. If you have all three? Game over.
3. Valley of Despair
Every entrepreneur goes through a “Valley of Despair.”
The winners push through it.
The rest jump to the next shiny thing and repeat the same 6-month loop for 20 years.
4. Build with leverage
Leverage your time with tools, people, and content.
Start solo. Then document it. Train someone.
Duplicate yourself.
5. Narrow Focus, Massive Results
Doing one thing well for a long time beats doing five things half-heartedly.
Most success stories come from extreme focus, not variety.
6. Culture > Strategy
Execution beats planning.
Train obsessively, give instant feedback, and enforce high standards.
Build a team that self-polices excellence.
7. Success hides in boring work
Great businesses aren’t flashy. They’re just relentless.
Do the obvious thing better and longer than anyone else. Don’t quit when it gets boring.
8. Be known for being you
Your weird story is your secret weapon. Don’t copy.
Double down on your quirks. They’re your brand.
9. Kill the ‘shoulds’
You don’t have to live by others’ rules.
Ditch the guilt.
Chase work that lights your soul on fire.
