Being a business owner can be a game of persistence.
Many businesses succeed by surviving hardship that trims down their competition.
A bi-product of these challenges is a toll on your mental health.
When talking with my customers, I find many of our calls end up on the mental health challenges of being a business owner, not just business outcomes.
I’ve made it a priority to learn about mental and physical health.
This helps me as a business owner AND enables me to better support my customers.
What is the point of owning a business if the stress ends up killing you?
You might be better off with a corporate job.
No thanks. OK, so mental health…
“Unf#ck Your Brain” by Faith G. Harper has some great tools for healing.
My favourite lesson was about reframing past traumatic events to think about the benefits of that event.
Not easy, but you can change your perception of a past event to better serve you forever.
For me, I think about where I’ve felt betrayed in the past. Personal and professional.
I’ve been able to reframe this and see the benefits of how I’ve been able to improve myself to prevent and handle this in the future.
Here were my key take-aways:
1. The Brain’s Reaction to Trauma
Trauma can rewire the brain, leading to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
These reactions are normal responses to abnormal events.
2. Neuroplasticity
Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to adapt and change throughout life.
We can retrain our brain to respond differently.
3. Tools for Healing
Tools and exercises to help you heal your brain include methods like breathing exercises, meditation, and cognitive reframing to help you gain better control over their emotional responses.
4. Empowerment Through Understanding
Understanding the workings of your brain can empower you to change your brain’s wiring and, consequently, your emotional and mental health.
