It was one of the first books that James Schramko recommended (insisted) that I read.
Written in the 1960s and became the foundations for what has been taught by authorities on personal development like Zig Ziglar, Tony Robbins and Brian Tracy.
Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz. (I still can’t understand what that book title means).
It combines the psychological methods of training elite athletes and cognitive behavioural techniques.
Maltz’s inspiration came from his earlier career as a plastic surgeon.
He found that his plastic surgery patients often had expectations that were not satisfied by the surgery.
It was their inner game that needed work.
How many books have you read 3 times or more?
I’ve easily surpassed that with this gem.
Here are my key take-aways:
1. Self-Image is Your Reality
Just as a man is, so he sees. Your self-image shapes your actions and reality. Picture yourself strong, capable, and you become it.
2. Mistakes are Gold, Not Dirt
When you stumble, you’re learning, not failing. Each mistake is a chance to get better, just like practising a swing in golf.
3. Visualise Your Win
Before a big game, athletes picture themselves winning. Your mind’s eye is a powerful tool. Visualise your success vividly; this mental rehearsal programs your subconscious to turn these visions into reality.
4. Relaxation Unlocks Potential
A tense mind, much like a clenched fist, cannot operate at its full potential. Embrace relaxation; it’s the secret sauce for creativity and problem-solving.
5. Rewrite Limiting Beliefs
Your mind often plays old, limiting beliefs. Act as your own editor. Rewrite these scripts with empowering narratives that propel you forward.
6. Courage Grows by Doing
Courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the decision to move forward despite it. Each act of bravery is a muscle strengthened, preparing you for greater challenges.
7. Seek Happiness in the Journey
True happiness doesn’t reside in distant goals, but in the journey itself. Find joy in the process and the growth.
